You’d think that in any context a man putting his mouth over a baby’s penis and sucking would be seen as outrageous by each and every person with sound mind, right?
Wrong. The below image is of one of the most disgusting religious practices I can think of aside from female circumcision and child brides.

This is the kind of thing that makes me so angry with religion. In no other area of our society could we allow this to occur under any circumstances, but for when it’s done under the banner of ‘religion’. It’s archaic, disgusting, redundant and inexcusable in today’s societies. Yet, I’m sure many religion apologist would brush something off, even this horrendous, while offering up the feeble argument that ‘it’s their culture and customs, how can we complain?’
We can complain because we know the consequences of such actions, we can recognise how useless and old-fashioned such practices are, and societal morality should dictate that we protect the freedoms of all individuals, including babies, and including protecting them from religion. Especially when it can directly endanger their lives.
When are we going to be able to stop, look at our cultures, at our practices and rituals and say, “hey, this is no longer relevant, no longer useful, no longer practical, it’s time to reassess things and evolve in order to increase the well-being of everyone”?
I never understand the attitude people have when it comes to things like religion, and even more recently the crap relating to 2012 apocalypse because the Mayan calendar is ending, that the older something is, the longer it has been practiced, the more legitimate it must be. I often hear arguments like, “but the Bible is so old, why wouldn’t it be true?”, “but these people have practiced *insert ritual* for 2000 years, how can we say they should stop?”, “but these people have believed *insert superstition* for 200 years, how can we tell them they’re wrong”.
I’m sorry, but the age of something, or the length of time it has been practiced, isn’t sufficient evidence as to it’s legitimacy or justification. People 2000 years ago were a shit load more ignorant to the ways of the world than probably the average 10 year old. How on earth would any of their writings, traditions and rituals be absolute and relevant to today’s societies and people? Why can we move on from things like believe the world was flat, that the Sun revolves around the Earth, that animals spontaneously generate out of nothing, that disease and illness were caused by the devil or evil spirits, but we still allow children to be mentally, and sometimes physically, abused as a result of ancient and redundant ideology?
There is no honour or dignity in holding onto the past. If we can’t learn and evolve then we’re the ones who ultimately suffer. As an atheist, scientist and compassionate humanist this sort of shit I cannot and will not tolerate. It is our obligation as members of such an advanced and aware species to work towards increasing the well-being of all other humans and sentient beings, and remove as much needless suffering and death as we can.
Rant over.
wow! we have a long way to go to erase centuries of programmed B S..thanks for sharing no matter how disturbing..we can’t be happy living in blissful ignorance anymore..
That’s it, knowledge is power. The more we know about these sorts of atrocities the more we can hopefully do something to prevent them in the future.
Keep talking. You are so right. Religion is dangerous to humanity and the planet.
Like you Pete, I had only heard of this recently, it may have been through the blog and books of Bart Centre (aka The Atheist Camel) but I am not sure as it was about a year ago.
This really sickened me and it is disturbing, to say the least, on so many levels. It also underlines again why religious dogma is so fucked up. Logically, if God created man in his image then you’d think he’d be a bit pissed off with people lobbing bits off his reason for no reason. The bizarre reverse engineered, pseudo-logic offered that it is “To complete the form of man, by removing what he claims to be a redundant organ” makes no sense since, as far as we know Jews don’t remove any other “redundant organs” in childhood, such as appendices, one kidney or the spleen… Anyhow, if God thought it wasn’t needed anymore wouldn’t he just make sure the next generation were born without it, or perhaps remove it miraculously in one fell swoop?
Maybe though , as you evocative title suggests, religious leaders are just filthy old perverts that like a bit of cock in their mouths once in a while.
That is crazy, you have to work (read) to be a good atheist, its almost like being anti-religion is a religion in and of itself…
You don’t have to do anything to be an atheist (good or bad). Atheism simply means not believing in fictional gods… like all new born babies
Poor baby
Yep this is truly disgusting. Children have contracted and died from hepatitis because of this practice. New York Times reported on it some years ago and Christopher Hitchens wrote about it in his book ‘God is not Great’, that’s how I learnt of it. There’s not enough facepalms in the whole universe to adequately respond to this!
This is beyond revolting.
It’s not just religion. This is my exact response to those in the USA who call themselves ‘strict Constitutionalists’. A set of rules written over 200 years ago should not be deemed the be-all and end-all of how to run a nation. No more so than a set of religious stories written over 2000 years ago. It does seem as though some people are much more interested in studying and parsing each and every word of whatever they call their holy book, looking for the original meaning, than in trying to adapt the essence of it to current conditions.
Strict Constitutionalism is not a religion, nor is it deemed to have been dictated by a fictional sky god!
The US constitution was one of the few doctrines written with relatively clear thought processes that was agreed and codified by a fair cross section of the responsible American intellectuals at the time.
Your comparison between this and the mythical gibberish that was handed down largely through oral tradition of a bunch of ignorant desert dwellers is laughable.
that is a most awesome, insightful comment, with which i could not possibly agree more. The governance system, is not at all dis-similar to that of religion, and in fact many horrible parallels can be found, just at the surface alone!
lets start with the heirarchy.
Move on to the establishment of the words of men as being absolute law,
And then perhaps end it with the nihilistic dream contained within its words.
I wish I could have been there to shoot these fucking Jews in the head and then kidnap that baby singe could have a normal life. What the fuck is wrong with people! It’s time to end religion! It does no good!
So it*
Ending religion and outlawing dangerous practices are two different things, non-religious persons have sexually abused/molested children as well, the difference is in protection by the law. I personally don’t care enough about other peoples personal beliefs to care if they are “religious” the only time I feel “society” has a responsibility to interject itself is when it is harming others and in the case of a child being forced to do things for a religion, that is harming others, he is not old enough to decide if he wants this done or not…
susan, the constitution is still relevant in every facet of our american society. its a lot different than sucking cock. how about you actually read that piece of parchment and realize that without it, you arent human anymore. your stupidity offends me.
You are the idiot, if you think we can live in the past, and the future simultaneously.
These are practices made up by MAN… not God.
It’s not so much important WHO made them up, it’s WHY they were made up. They were done as a direct result of superstitious religious beliefs. So I’m not blaming God, I’m blaming religion.
Good point … until you realize that god was created by man.
Nonetheless, to appease a man-made God.
LOL. Love it. I wrote a little piece on this just last year when I got mildly peeved with some double-standards in the Victorian Jewish community last year:
Killing two faygels with one stone

If anyone is going to perform a surgical procedure, should they not be educated in the matters of hygiene. No medical practitioner in his right mind would put his mouth or anyone elses on an open cut. The latest apparently pseudo scientific intrusion is a group of doctors offering proof that circumcision is very effective in preventing venereal diseases, especially AIDS. Circumcision is a puberty ritual of a brutal ignorant savage warring killing diseased unclean unsanitary raiding primitive tribe of people called Jews. The history of death and debilitation accompanying this ritual is far longer and fuller than you mention, each death effectively a sacrifice to the wrathful bloodthirsty humanoid ethereal invention (blaspheme, idolatry) of their primitive mentalities. We overlook your Puritan attempts to associate this with sexual gratification, as it appears to purely religious insanity.
AIDS isn’t a venereal disease, HIV is. AIDS is what eventuates when you have HIV.
Hospital performed circumcisions are statistically beneficial, they lead to less risk for a myriad of potential penile diseases/infections and when done appropriately are very safe (therefore benefit/cost ratio is very high and it is considered a good thing to do in medicine). So, it is not about circumsion in general but the way it is being done.
Though there is still controversy regarding the universal medical benefits of male circumcision, it is undoubtedly a useful procedure in some situations. However, the point of Pete’s original posting was, as you point out, to highlight the barbaric methods being used by these stone-age practitioners when it can be done safely under medical supervision.
This is simply not so.
R. S. Van Howe
A Cost-Utility Analysis of Neonatal Circumcision
Med Decis Making, December 1, 2004; 24(6): 584 – 601
“Neonatal circumcision increased incremental costs by $828.42 per patient and resulted in an incremental 15.30 well-years lost per 1000 males. If neonatal circumcision was cost-free, pain-free, and had no immediate complications, it was still more costly than not circumcising. Using sensitivity analysis, it was impossible to arrange a scenario that made neonatal circumcision cost-effective.”
I bet the catholics wish they’d thought of this first.
but they did not. because jews have been around longer, and are far more perverse!
If they were to give up these rituals, it would mean them admitting their god is not real. They can admit things such as the earth orbits the sun, because if they didn’t they wouldn’t appear rational (even in their eyes) and no would would continue to listen to them. If we can’t convince them their god doesn’t exist, maybe we at least need to give them a way out from doing these rituals where they can still believe there god exists (for now). But I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.
A small but growing number of Jews are choosing to name their babies without surgery in a ritual called Brit Shalom. Contact details for more than 60 celebrants are here: http://tinyurl.com/britshalom
shouldn’t children be given their own choice on what is to be done to their bodies when they are old enough to understand and not have other people make those choices for them.
New International Version (©1984)
No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise is not from men, but from God.
A REAL JEW is one whose heart is circumcised, CUT-BROKEN BEFORE GOD. These are not real JEWS-
The Susan who attacked the constitution sounds like a paid Zionist shill. I wonder if baby cock and blood is kosher…
So funny how some people (yourself) say such stupid things and others (Thomas Paine in the below post) say such important things… the difference I suppose is that Thomas Paine made a difference in the world and sadly you may not. To argue with people and teach people a new way being an @hole is not a fantastic strategy and it is an important point that people reading this article are going to be interested in potentially making a change (change laws to outlaw practices like this) so intelligent dialogue is actually helpful and ignorant dialog hurts the cause…
“A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it the superficial appearance of being right.” Thomas Paine
Religion still prospers because MOST people are ignorant and lazy. Why think, when “insert random supernatural being ” will do it for you?
As long as we are content with allowing ignorance to propagate, we will be forced to suffer fools

[...] This particular practice deserves special mention. It is a circumcision ritual practised by some Orthodox Jews where the remaining blood is sucked from the baby’s penis by a practitioner called a Mohel. It has led to many babies around the world contracting diseases such as herpes and syphillis, and can obviously increase the risk of infection and death (link). [...]
Are you kidding me….ARE.YOU.KIDDING.ME?!? This is just being added to the list of things that makes me happy to be an atheist and proud.

Is “B’peh” the noise the priest makes when expelling the unfortunate child’s foreskin from his mouth at the end of the ceremony?
Lol, indubitably!
“So Rabbi, do you make a lot of money doing circumcisions?”
“No, but we do get to keep the tips!”
BADA BUM!!!
I have been to at least 15 circumcisions. I have only seen this done with the use of a plastic tube as a barrier. This is only done to get blood flowing, not some perverted reason. If any mohel still does this without a barrier, that’s pretty weird, but it’s only for the good of the baby. Rabbis haven’t been known to carry many diseases
“…but it’s only for the good of the baby”, yeah right. And such “good” would include what exactly? Billions of uncircumcized boys and men seem to get along alright, thank you very much…
Millions of people have died as a result of others trying to do what was “good for them”.
“To get blood flowing”? Are you crazy (or are they)? A baby can afford to lose only 35ml (two tablespoons) of blood before he’s in danger, and there is a tiny artery that is easily nicked. Babies do die of circumcision, but it’s in nobody’s interest to admit that that was the cause, so it gets blamed on something else.
“Rabbis haven’t been known to carry many diseases” It’s not about rabbis, it’s about human saliva. One mohel gave three babies herpes in New York in 2005 and one died.
But from the baby’s point of view, he’s beyond caring what touches his penis after he’s just had the most senstive part sliced off. Nelson Mandela described as being like red-hot iron running through his veins.
Forced genital cutting of children does not bestow any “health benefits” upon them.
For 140+ years American medicine has been trying to justify this assault on children’s genitals. If an adult wishes to cut off part of their OWN penis because they may believe it protects them from something, or they prefer the look or whatever, that’s their penis and their right.
Children however need to be protected from adults who would impose a deficit upon their bodies.
Forced genital cutting of children in a religious setting, with or without the adult to infant cock sucking (Metztzah B’peh) is particularly odious and strikes me as prime evidence that religion is sexually abusive, harmful, and morally bankrupt.

Isn’t this child abuse? Sick, sick, sick, leave it to the Jews to practise something like this and get a way with it. So much for their traditions-YUK! Their arrogance will soon destroy their culture, one that has been cast out for hundreds of years by others who were fed up with them too. Iran will soon show them they are not unfaultable. Peace
Calm down – 2 cases in 7 years means this is rare outcome ref: http://nydn.us/y0TcL5 . I think you need to keep that in mind as well. Yes there is room for the practice to be modified to avoid oral contact – that shoud be the focus of the change. Parents could require a “tube” used to prevent oral contact ref: http://bit.ly/zUfvVo and still meet their ritual requirements. Personally I don’t agree with circumcision, but parents should be given an informed choice about using a “tube” alternative and the risks if they choose not to. They are responsible for the outcome. This small change and is generally acceptable rather than trying to ban the entire ritual which would be much harder. If you have the information most rational parents will chose the safe path.
I’m perfectly calm (sorry if the post gave the opposite impression), I just don’t think one can justify such acts of ignorant brutality, especially to infants, at all today. There’s just no excuse, and religion isn’t a justification for this sort of thing. We shouldn’t be encouraging people to continue such rituals in a ‘safer way’ because they’re barbaric, dangerous and redundant at their best. Any operation has an element of risk involved, and unless the operation is required to save the child’s life I don’t think it should be up to the parent to be able to decide whether or not to do such a thing to them based on religious beliefs or not.
[...] I’m so sick of hearing about these stories! [...]
This is truly disgusting and it’s such a double standard against other religions. If a Catholic priest puts his mouth on a boy’s genitals, America wants him to rot in prison. If a Jewish mohel puts his mouth on a boy’s genitals, America thinks it’s beautiful and that anyone who wants to outlaw it is a Nazi. There’s a bill right now called the Male Genital Mutilation Bill (www.mgmbill.org) that some human rights activists have been trying to get passed (if it were passed, all American children would have protected from nontheraputic genital modification like circumcision). But many are relunctant to sponsor it because “it interferes with the Jewish religion.” Like Jewish children should have absolutely no rights whatsoever. Children die from this practice. It needs to end.
Damm and I thought a cocksucker was a myth. So it is real.
Gross…just like their religious books that condone every atrocity that one human can commit against another, and this shit still goes on today…wow.
Fucking sick fuck paedophile Jews. They wonder why so many people fucking hate them.
So because these ignorant fucks decide to believe in a bunch of BULLSHIT instead of FACTS and SCIENCE, they get special rights to abuse babies and suck on their cocks.
This is a small sect of Jewish people, the majority of Jews do not do this.
It’s hard to come by educated people on this subject, but you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks
