I found this incredibly interesting story today about a recently uncovered operation where Israeli Mossad agents were posing as US CIA agents in order to convince Pakistani terrorists from the Jundallah organisation to fight in their covert war against Iran.

It’s known as a “false flag” operation, and apparently several meetings have occurred openly between the undercover Mossad agents and Jundallah members in places like London… Anyway, have a read if you’re interested.

Browsing through Reddit today I found this quote by Sam Harris, with which I definitely agree.

The men who committed the atrocities of September 11 were certainly not “cowards”, as they were repeatedly described in the Western media, nor were they lunatics in any ordinary sense. They were men of faith–perfect faith, as it turns out–and this, it must finally be acknowledged, is a terrible thing to be.

So I thought I might take this and use it to describe my feelings on why religion is a force for evil in the world, and thus why I am an anti-theist.

As Steven Weinberg said:

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.

Though this may not always be the case for every single ‘good’ person who does bad things while thinking they’re doing good things–other non-religious dogmatic ideologies have led to similar results–one must realise that religion is undoubtedly the leading cause of this phenomena in the present world. Furthermore, the prevalence and level of the bad that is done by ‘good’ people is always that much higher when it comes to the religious. The perfect example I find myself stating again and again is Mother Teresa. She wasn’t a bad person, the majority of her Catholic followers, and even those who aren’t, would consider her saintly. However, the actions of this ‘good’ person resulted in the needless suffering and death of countless thousands, maybe even millions, of people in third world countries all across the world.

Using religion as her moral compass, this women perpetrated a great deal of evil. She fought abortion and contraception with tooth and claw, which would have lead to an innumerable amount of unwanted births as well as the spread of STIs like HIV aids. She believed that poverty and suffering was a virtue, which she believed people needed to endure as opposed to fight in order to reach the pearly white gates of heaven. Clearly such beliefs prevented her from doing real good, and actually improving the lives of the impoverished. Again though, she wasn’t a bad person, but her fervent religious beliefs lead to unnecessarily evil actions.

One might argue that on its own religion is relatively benign. However, like a case of fireworks on an oil tanker, when religion comes in contact with philanthropy you get truly explosive and devastating results.

Back to the terrorists who perpetrated the abhorrent acts on 9/11. These 19 men, alongside Osama Bin Laden and the rest of Al Qaeda, were not ‘bad’ people. They were not cowards, they were not inherently evil. They were good men, who were surely loving sons, loving fathers, loving brothers, who cared about their country and fellow country men. Who cared about their God, their beliefs and their holy scripture. However, as a result of their religious fundamentalism, these otherwise good men were led to do incredibly evil things to others.

THIS is why I am anti-theist. I might add, however, that this shouldn’t be confused with being anti-theists. I don’t blame the believers as much as I blame the belief. Though I don’t feel ignorance and naivety is an excuse. Overall though, this is why I think religion is such a force for evil in the world. It’s followers are not necessarily evil, but all to often their actions are. On a good day religion is a sleeping leviathan, harmless and benign only out due to its temporary absence. Though on a bad day when the leviathan awakes, devastation follows, lives are lost, suffering endures and evil prevails.

So the idiot who had a cry about South Park depicting Mohammed in a bear suit in one of their episodes received a jail sentence of 25 years earlier this year. Adam Chesser is a US born 21-year-old who turned to islam in high school.

Chesser also admitted that he tried to go to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab, an Islamic militant group that the United States considers a terrorist organization.

Apparently he tried to also smuggle his infant son onto the plane when going to Somalia… What an idiot. See you when you’re 46 mate.
